Position Description

Performs skilled work of the journeyman level involving the installation, maintenance and service of plumbing systems. Work involves installing, maintaining, repairing and servicing gas, water, air and sewer lines. Also involves maintaining existing steam systems. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs sinks, fume hoods, eye washes, disposal units, gas, air, water and sewer systems
  • Replaces and repairs valves; cuts threads, joints, pipes, and fittings
  • Unstops sewers, lavatories, sinks, commodes, and urinals
  • Uses roto-rooter, threading machines, drill presses, hand and power tools
  • Checks D.I closets to insure proper deionizing and to check for leaks
  • Maintains, repairs, and replaces components of existing steam systems, and check hardness of condensate
  • Maintains, repairs, and replaces DI house, hot water and circulating pumps
  • Must have and maintain valid State of Texas Driver's License to be able to operate State vehicles to run errands and pick up parts.


Occasional Duties

  • Performs on-call duties as essential personnel of the Institution and at the direction of the Institution and Supervisors
  • Performs any and all duties deemed necessary and assigned by any supervisory level Facilities Operations personnel


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Licensed Journeyman Plumber with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners or other state or four years of job-related experience, and training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from rough sketches, blue prints, and drawings; ability to locate and identify troubles in plumbing lines or equipment and to plan and implement repairs
  • Skills in the use and purpose of hand tools and power tools of the plumbing trade
  • Knowledge of the practices and hazards of steam and steam equipment.
