Job Summary

This position exists to provide legal expertise to the Department of Human Services ("Department") supporting the Children and Family Services Administration and DHS Operations. The individual in this position will be responsible for providing the Department with legal expertise to ensure DHS's compliance with all state and federal laws, addressing legal issues arising out of the transfer of programs and responsibilities to the new Department of Children, Youth and Families, assisting the Assistant Deputy General Counsel with coordinating the Department's litigation, and collaborating with other Department staff concerning implementation of Department legal policies and best practices. The individual in this position will conduct complex legal and policy research producing written products for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide the Department with legal expertise to support DHS's compliance with all state and federal laws.
  • Assist with coordinating the Department's litigation and collaborating with other Department staff concerning implementation of Department policies and best practices.
  • Conduct complex legal research, writing, and analysis and provide legal advice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

**To facilitate proper crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month, day and year for each job held.**
  • JD degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Current license and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota.
  • At least three (3) years' experience as a practicing attorney.

Experience must also demonstrate the following:
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.
  • The ability to build and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience providing legal advice on diverse and complex human services and data privacy matters; and
  • Experience in one or more areas of law related to the position.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience representing clients in civil litigation.
    • A variety of experiences working effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures.
    • Experience working with the Minnesota Attorney General's Office and/or another State government agencies.

    Additional Requirements
    • Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
