Role and Responsibilities

This position is accountable for providing manual labor at fill site project locations. The Shoreman performs tasks associated with the operation of the fill site, including the support equipment and project site equipment. Typically, they will work closely with the Fill Site Foremen and other skilled crafts persons.

Works as assigned by the Fill Site Foreman to ensure the successful completion of Fill Site projects.

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy construction projects.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.
  • Maintains a clean job site: picks up all tools and equipment and secures job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Performs materials handling and storage.
  • Works with and assists crew in excavation activities which may include: hoisting material, tools, equipment, cleaning and preparing work site, digging trenches, setting braces and/or forms, shoveling concrete, dirt, and/or sand into construction areas, cleanup of rubble and debris, and removal of waste materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • Responsible and accountable for employee’s own personal safety, as well as the safety of all co-workers and any others the employee encounters.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed. Brings problems to the attention of Supervisor.
  • This position frequently requires work away from home at remote project locations for extended durations.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Minimum of six months to one-year related experience and/or training, which provides the necessary construction labor skills, knowledge and abilities is required.

1 Year experience as a Shoreman in the Dredging industry is preferred.

The employee must have:

  • Knowledge of practices and materials involved in construction labor, and be capable of demonstrating proficiency to perform the job.
  • Knowledge of operation of various types of marine equipment, tools, and devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results driven.

Physical/Mental Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Shoremen must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 70lbs.
  • Must be able to push and pull at peak force of 150lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and/or vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
