Overview

RES is looking for a Mid-Level Ecological Restoration Designer based out of our Louisville, KY or Frankfort, KY office.

The mission: to support a growing, multi-disciplinary team of ecosystem restoration designers and engineers currently working on some of the nation’s largest rivers, streams, and wetland restoration projects! We take pride in the work that we do, and we make appropriate decisions to produce well-performing projects. The projects we want you to focus on are related to stream and wetland restoration as well as hydraulic and hydrology investigation.

Responsibilities

25% of your time will consist of Fieldwork, where you will be performing geomorphic, biological, and ecological site assessments, fulfilling mitigation field protocols, and applying fluvial geomorphic/hydraulic surveys. You will be collaborating with a dynamic multi-disciplinary team on wetland and stream design development and project implementation. You will assist with collecting and analyzing field data to interpret existing conditions and identify potential design constraints to support plan set development. You will be performing construction oversight and post-construction monitoring on our project sites, so be ready for travel and occasional overnights!

75% of your time, you will be designing and processing data! The team will need support on technical calculations, floodplain analyses, discharge selection design, and development of design metrics into a 3-dimensional design with the Autodesk Civil 3D environment. You will be using AutoCAD extensively to produce plans and develop preliminary, final, and construction restoration plan sets, so AutoCAD Civil 3D experience is a valuable plus. You will also be supporting the team in data processing and restoration design technique documentation, regulatory permit applications, and post-construction monitoring reports related to restoration design and some mitigation crediting calculations.

You will be juggling several projects simultaneously, so time management skills and the ability to prioritize are paramount. Be ready to shine your communication skills during the interview!

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years’ experience in a natural resources design field such as landscape architecture or a natural sciences field (such as but not limited to geology, geomorphology, environmental science, ecology, or biology).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS, and/or HEC-RAS.
  • Fundamental understanding of fluvial geomorphology.

What will make you stand out?

  • On-the-job experience with stream/wetland restoration, field data collection, water resources engineering;
  • Knowledge of geomorphology, stream ecology, and/or aquatic biology;
  • Knowledge of watershed hydrology, stream hydraulics, and sediment transport
  • Understanding of the use of regional regressions, regional curves, and reference data in stream restoration design;
  • Ability to evaluate design discharge, channel cross-section, profile, and planform using a variety of methods;
  • Ability to read and interpret ecological restoration construction plans;
  • Ability to interpret results from H&H models.
