Functional Job Summary:

The mission of the Underwriting function is to foster sound underwriting and business decisions, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department to offer coverage appropriate with individual risk profiles. Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on one-on-one training and on the job exposure; developing their analytical skills, including extensive knowledge of medical, health, and financial acumen to support independent decision making; effective communication, and leadership skills. Responsibilities vary based on the business segment, business and division priorities, and the level of the position. All roles are expected to prioritize customer service and develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.

Education & Experience:

- 6+ years of work experience as an Individual Disability Underwriter analyzing increasingly complex medical and financial information while progressively taking on tasks to assist the team outside of daily tasks

- High School Diploma (Bachelor's Degree in Business preferred)

Knowledge & Skills:

Extensive medical and financial knowledge in order to analyze detailed written information for risk assessment against requested policy plan information, express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service skills and excellent time management skills present. Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong demonstrated capability to mentor and provide one-on-one training as needed. Aptitude to identify training gaps and needs of trainees.

Customer Service

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$72,750.00 - $106,500.00
