The Department of Biology, Marine Biology & Environmental Science at Roger Williams University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Marine Biology with molecular biological expertise to teach lecture and laboratory sections of a 2-semester introductory biology sequence in addition to marine biology coursework in their area of expertise. Applicants with experience teaching introductory biology and who have expertise in Marine Microbial Ecology, Coral Biology, Ecology of Marine Natural Products, or Marine Biodiversity Discovery are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, mentoring and student engagement, as well as service to the college and community. Winter and/or Summer teaching, if available, would be for additional compensation. This is an outstanding opportunity to engage with a cordial, research-productive and teaching-focused faculty who value collaboration with undergraduate partners. This is a full-time, temporary position designed to enhance our department's capacity to deliver high-quality education and research in the field of molecular marine biology. The appointment will commence in August 2024.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach the equivalent of 21 contact hours over the course of the 2024-25 Academic year.
  • Lead 4 course sections (lecture and/or lab, 12 contact hours total) of Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology and/or Principles of Oceanography in the Fall 2024 semester.
  • Lead 3 course sections (lecture and/or lab, 9 contact hours) in the Spring 2025 semester, to include some combination of Introduction to Ecology and Evolution and an upper-level laboratory-based course related to molecular aspects of marine biology in the Spring 2025 semester. Relevant courses could include, but are not limited to, Marine Microbial Ecology, Ecology of Marine Natural Products, Coral Microbiology, or Molecular Marine Biodiversity. Courses may include lectures, laboratory sessions, and fieldwork, as applicable.
  • Engage in service activities.


Job Requirements:
  • A Ph.D. in Marine Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: Microbial Ecology, Ecology of Marine Natural Products, Coral Microbiology, or Molecular Marine Biology.
  • Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and service activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching laboratory and lecture sections of Introductory Biology and/or Oceanography.
  • Prior experience teaching upper-level, molecular-based laboratory coursework for undergraduates.
